Remodeling in Durham, NH

Benchmark is a local, family-owned business based in downtown Newmarket, just 8 miles from Durham. You work directly with the family that runs it, close by and easy to reach when you need us.

Durham holds two kinds of houses at once. There are the genuinely old ones near the village and along the Oyster River, center-chimney capes and colonials with small closed-off kitchens built when a kitchen was a working back room. Then there are the ranches and colonials that went up as the university grew, now fifty and sixty years old with their original layouts intact. Both end up at the same question: how do you open the kitchen to the rest of the house without gutting what makes it worth living in. Older Durham homes have often been altered a few times already, so we open things up carefully and find out what is actually holding the house up before we plan around it.

Bathrooms in town tell a similar story. In the antique homes it is usually a bath that was carved out of a bedroom or a hall closet decades ago, tight and awkward, with plumbing that has been patched more than once. In the newer stock it is the original builder bath, a fiberglass tub surround and a single vanity. Either way the fix is real space planning first, then a tiled shower built on proper waterproofing, and wiring and venting brought up to current code while the walls are open.

That's the difference between a remodel that fights an old house and one that fits it. Whether your home calls for a clean, well-built update or a full premium renovation, we have the experience and the team to bring your dream space to life.

What Seacoast Homeowners Say

5 out of 5 stars
“Benchmark completed our bathroom remodel and it came out beautifully. Lee was incredibly responsive, patient, professional, and warm throughout the process. This was a challenging project due to the age of our home (built in 1865) and my very specific vision, but the team handled every obstacle with ease and kept me informed at every step. They saw the project through to completion and have continued to stand by their work, providing follow-up adjustments whenever needed.”

“From our very first meeting, during the design process and through the construction to completion, every person we came into contact with from Benchmark and various subcontractors were professional, polite, knowledgeable and friendly. Lee guided us step by step during the entire process of picking our cabinets, counters, flooring and the design of a custom cat area to accommodate a pet drinking fountain. Ian and his crew did an outstanding job installing the cabinets and the finish work. Any concerns we had were addressed timely and to our satisfaction. All subcontractors (floor, electric, plumbing, and counter tops) were excellent. Any concerns were addressed fully. When Lee and Ian say they want customers 100% satisfied, they mean it and it happens. Thank you Benchmark for our beautiful kitchen!”

“My experience with Benchmark was amazing from start to finish! Lee was responsive in scheduling an in-home consultation, had a very thorough and professional design process and ensured I knew every detail about my project. He was responsive to every inquiry and kept me informed throughout, even working over weekends to get it finished by my deadline. Ian was extremely professional installing the kitchen, on time, cleaned up daily and the finished job is perfect. I highly recommend this company. The finished project is fabulous and I got 2 offers on the home in the first day of showings-- the kitchen was the star of the show!”
